The gastrointestinal tract is essential for life and is responsible for digestion and absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste and non-digestible products. The tract spans from mouth to anus and is associated with several other organs which facilitate its function including the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. In particular the summer school will focus on the functions of the oesophagus and stomach, the pancreas, the liver, and provide an overview of the various digestive processes and common gastrointestinal cancers. Delivery will be based around lectures, small group teaching and formative quizzes as a mechanism of providing extra support and feedback. Nearly all the material will be delivered with a strong clinical focus and emphasis on disease and treatment.
