Abstract: During my presentation, I will provide a brief overview of (i) the biological features that distinguish stem cells from other cell types, (ii) the variety of stem cells and the crucial roles they play throughout life, and (iii) how our understanding of stem cells might be applied as new therapeutic approaches in clinical medicine. In the second part of my talk I will focus on bone marrow haematopoietic stem cells (HSC), which underpin the blood system and have served as a paradigm, shaping much of the methodology and many concepts that led to the expansion of the discipline of stem cell biology over the last half a century. Lastly, I will discuss the direction of the research in my own laboratory, which for more than two decades has been concerned with the mechanisms that regulate the normal behaviour of HSC and how these can be disrupted by inherited or acquired genetic factors leading to blood diseases.
